### Summary
****This position is open until filled****
This is an open continuous announcement which will remain open until filled. This vacancy has multiple cut-off dates, with the first cut off date being May 11, 2018 with subsequent cut-off dates every 14 days. Management retains the right to make additional selections as positions become available.
**Note:**Applicants education and length of Nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and step of the applicant selected.
**Work Schedule:**The work schedule will be determined based on the needs of the Medical Center.
The Providence VA Medical Center is an acute care facility operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week. While most tours of duty are scheduled during the day, the possibility of working evenings, nights and weekends does exist. Shift changes will be considered based on patient and facility needs.

### Responsibilities
* Establishes policies, standards of care and standards of practice while providing and directing the Veteran's primary care.
* Utilizes advanced skills in problem identification and clarification, treatment, planning and implementation of the plan.
* Collaborates with other members of the health care team to improve the quality of care delivered to the Veteran.
* Provides appropriate care for Veterans ranging in age from 18 through geriatric years, taking into consideration diagnosis and physical, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs.
* Takes accountablility for clinically advancing education competencies, and skills in the holistic assessment/treatment of identified populations, individuals, families and groups; and the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic illness.
* Practices at a high level of specialized knowledge, skill and proficiency.
* Works autonomously and in collaboration with a variety of individuals to diagnose/manage clients healthcare problems, serves as a healthcare resource/interdisciplinary consultant, as needed, with particular emphasis in an outpatient setting.
* Demonstrates leadership and creative approaches to educating program planning and implementation, and is accountable for adhering to established policies and procedures, standards of care, and standards of practice.
* Plans, develops, implements and evaluates activities and programs designed to assist staff members to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality patient care and to fulfill organizational goals.
* Demonstrates leadership and accomplishments in developing and implementing programs to improve the delivery of patient care.

### Qualifications
**Basic Requirements**:
* **United States Citizenship:** Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
* **English Language Proficiency:** Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
* **Education:** Graduate of a master's program approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by applicant.
* The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), an accrediting arm of the National League for Nursing.
* The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), an accrediting arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).
The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. In these programs, students are given a certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX and should submit the certification to VA prior to appointment. Students do not earn a BSN, but receive a MSN degree upon completion of course work. A copy of the MSN transcript must be provided to VA. Bridge programs that confer a master's degree also fully meet the education requirement, even though a Bachelor's degree is not awarded. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
* **License:** Must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a Nurse Practitioner with current, full, active, and unrestricted certification as a Nurse Practitioner in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico) or the United States or the District of Columbia.
* **Certification Requirements:**Maintain full and current certification as a Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.
**Preferred Experience:**
* A minimum of 2-3 years of successful and progressive experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
* Prior experience delivering primary care in an outpatient setting.
* Currently certified as an Adult, Family, or Gerontological Nurse Practitioner.
**Grade Determinations**: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
* Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
* Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
* Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
* Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
* Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
**Reference:** VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
**Physical Standards:**This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling, pushing, and sitting at a keyboard. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs and able to manage work activities in a highly technological integrated work environment.

### Additional information
Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
