### Summary
This Secretary (Office Automation) position is located in The Director's Office and is not a bargaining unit position, this is a permanent full-time position.
**Work Schedule:**The work schedule will be determined based on the needs of the Medical Center. The Providence VA Medical Center is an acute care facility operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week. While most tours of duty are scheduled during the day, the possibility of working evenings, nights and weekends does exist. Shift changes will be considered base on patient and facility needs.

### Responsibilities
* Uses software programs to modify text to accomplish formats, revisions, deletions and additions.
* Composes short, routine informational material in narrative format.
* Composes correspondence using correct grammar, format, spelling, and procedural accuracy.
* - Prepares inter-office memoranda.
* Reviews outgoing correspondence for grammatical correctness
* Provides information to supervisors, coworkers by telephone, or in-person. Acts as liaison between key staff.
* Responds to inquiries regarding administrative concerns/issues.
* Develops Standard Office Procedures for administrative tasks.
* Evaluates administrative procedures to identify needed changes. Reviews policies for completeness and accuracy.
* Participates in administrative professional conferences.

***Basic Requirements***
**Citizen:** Must be a citizen of the United States.
**English Language Proficiency:** Must be proficient in both spoken and written English.
**Selective Placement Factor:**Applicant must be able to type a minimum of 40 words per minute (must be detailed in your resume or provide a certificate.)
**Specialized Experience GS-7:** Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of and that is typically in or related to the position of a Secretary. To be creditable the experience must have been equivalent to one (1) year at the GS-6 level in Federal service. Specialized experience includes: Establishing and implementing office practices and procedures; anticipating needs, identifying problems and taking action to preclude the development of emergency situations; screening correspondence for errors; screening calls and greeting visitors and maintaining calendar of appointments and events for a supervisor.
**Specialized Experience GS-8:** Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of and that is typically in or related to the position of a Secretary. To be creditable the experience must have been equivalent to one (1) year at the GS-7 level in Federal service. **Specialized Experience GS-9:** Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of and that is typically in or related to the position of a Secretary. To be creditable the experience must have been equivalent to one (1) year at the GS-8 level in Federal service. Specialized experience includes: Performing all secretarial and administrative duties for a high level executive or manager; establishing and implementing office practices and procedures to be used by administrative staff across services; anticipating needs, identifying problems and taking action to preclude the development of emergency situations; screening correspondence for errors; screening calls and greeting visitors; maintaining calendar of appointments and events for a supervisor, making travel arrangements and organizing meetings and conferences.

**Promotion Potential:** The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
**Note**: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
**Physical Requirements:**The work is mostly sedentary; however, it requires intense concentration. Some walking and bending are required in maintaining files, delivering and receiving messages and records within the main building of the Medical Center and other auxiliary buildings. Computers are used and therefore keyboarding is required.

**Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave**: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
